walk quickly, meet the boulder on the path about halfway up
crouch behind in its windless womb
silent snow should fluctuate around you, not settling
pause, place a gentle hand on the hardened earth
the waterfall will freeze soon like it always does

Summit: look out across our valley and hills
whisper to the cairn, it doesn’t matter what, confide
consider the years and the woods and the castle
and the mushrooms the crypt and the kirk and the little school
where everyone began thinking, reading, drawing
think about the things you can’t remember

Descent: hold the hollow memories
the amiable bog will have frozen for you
stop in the woods by the stream thats difficult to get across
submerge the hand until the cold is excruciating
cross, and look for something warm in the village
